[2021 TPD Keynote Speech] Joseph S. Nye, University Distinguished Service Professor at Harvard University – The Challenge of China and the Lessons of History

In early December 2021, the Chey Institute for Advanced Studies hosted the inaugural Trans-Pacific Dialogue in Washington, D.C., bringing together leading scholars and current and former high-level officials from South Korea, the United States, and Japan to engage in in-depth discussions on key issues concerning Northeast Asia and the Korean Peninsula. The keynote address was delivered by Professor Joseph S. Nye, who offered a unique analysis of U.S.-China relations and profound insights into the challenges ahead.
Professor Joseph S. Nye is a University Distinguished Service Professor and former Dean of the Harvard Kennedy School. He holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from Harvard University. From 1977 to 1979, he served as Deputy to the Under Secretary of State, and later chaired the National Security Council Group on Nonproliferation of Nuclear Weapons. Between 1993 and 1994, he served as Chair of the National Intelligence Council, providing intelligence assessments directly to the President. From 1994 to 1995, he held the position of Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs.
